There are numerous educational benefits of blogs. Blogs are:
§ Highly motivating to students, especially those who otherwise might not become participants in classrooms.
§ Excellent opportunities for students to read and write.
§ Effective forums for collaboration and discussion.
§ Powerful tools to enable scaffolding learning or mentoring to occur.
i strongly agree with ur point that it gives the "silent" & shy student to be active in blogs ... Maybe they're not good in speaking or afraid to express but they can write whatever they want to share .. That's why writing is the most amazing communication, In my own perspective of course, and the easiest.

It is a new technologies for information and communication continually appear. so I agree that blogging gives students a reason for expressing themselves well when they know alarge audience may be reading their writing . It also allowa them to learn from each other as well as experts on their topic .And, it takes them to contributors outside the classroon . It helps them realize that learning its for everyone evrywhere .
